National Gallery of Art Internship Program

The National Gallery of Art’s Academic Year Internship Program offers a comprehensive, immersive experience in the art world, spanning 34 weeks from September 22, 2026, to May 15, 2027. Interns actively participate in the museum’s daily operations and long-term projects, collaborating with professionals across various departments while focusing on areas aligned with their academic interests and career goals. The program emphasizes mentorship, pairing interns with experienced staff, and includes weekly sessions such as special tours, conversations with directors and senior administrators, and presentations providing insights into museum operations. Interns join a vibrant cohort community fostering mutual support and collective growth, with opportunities for hybrid work depending on project placement.

Financial support ensures accessibility, with an hourly stipend of $25.26 (totaling $34,353.60 for the period), a one-time cost-of-living stipend of $6,868 for relocation and housing assistance, federal health and life insurance benefits eligibility, and a transportation subsidy for public transit users. Two specialized nine-month internships funded by the John Wilmerding Fund focus on American art or digital interpretation. The program is designed for full-time commitment (40 hours/week) and welcomes candidates from diverse academic disciplines passionate about museum work.
